Shredded or pulverized pine bark is the most common bark component in media, but bark can also be obtained from other conifers or hardwood species. Barks should be composted prior to use to remove potentially toxic compounds found in fresh bark.

Bark is relatively low cost and light weight and is a popular container growing medium.

For propagation it is most often mixed with other media components, but can be used alone as with rhododendron cuttings.
