Quartz sand is one of the oldest media components used for propagation. It is a relatively inert material that is easily sterilized and adds air porosity to organic media mixes.
It is also a good medium used alone for outdoor beds used for rooting certain types of cuttings.
Its major drawback is that it is a heavy medium and therefore difficult to use in containers.
