Damping off is the term used to describe the death of small seedlings resulting from attacks by certain fungi, including Phythium, Rhizoctonia, Botrytis and Phytophthora.

These organisms are common in soils and can be a serious problem for greenhouse seedling production.

This is why growers use pasteurized media for greenhouse production.
