Some needle-leaved evergreen hardwood cuttings benefit from including older wood on the stem cutting. One way to accomplish this is to use a heel cutting.
The "heel" results from tearing the new growth away from the previous year's wood. The heel also gives the cutting more surface area to absorb auxin and water.
