Grafting is the art of connecting two pieces of living plant tissue together in such a manner that they will unite and subsequently grow and develop as one composite plant.

A graft consists of the scion which becomes the above ground growth and the rootstock that produces the root system.

There are many techniques for grafting, but in general grafting is done when the rootstock is active and the scion is dormant.
