An autoclave is used to sterilize media, tools and container vessels.

It is a device that can heat materials to 121°C (218°F) under pressure. This is important because it provides the necessary high temperature to kill microbes, but because of the added pressure liquids do not boil away.

Tissue culture medium is usually dispensed into containers and sterilized in an autoclave for 20 minutes at 121°C.
