Hyperhydricity (originally called vitrification) is characterized by a translucent, water-soaked, succulent appearance that results in cultures that deteriorate and fail to proliferate properly.

It is more common in cultures grown in liquid culture or on low agar concentrations.

Changing agar concentration or agar brand can help avoid hyperhydricity in most cases.
